In film noir, nothing is what it seems. Secrets lurk beneath every conversation, betrayals are inevitable, and danger is always just around the corner. The antiheroes of noir move through a world that is cruel, morally ambiguous, and unforgiving. They know that when a rare opportunity appears, it must be taken—because it might be their last.

In this course, we will explore the dark and fascinating universe of film noir, one of the most influential genres in the history of cinema. Through close analysis and discussion, we will examine four iconic films that helped define the style, themes, and atmosphere of noir.

Films we will analyze:

Out of the Past (1947), starring Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, and Jane Greer

Laura (1944), starring Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews, directed by Otto Preminger

The Woman in the Window (1944), starring Joan Bennett and Edward G. Robinson, directed by Fritz Lang

Double Indemnity (1944), starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray, directed by Billy Wilder
