What if the most emotional films in Hollywood history were also among the most politically subversive?
For decades, melodrama was dismissed by film critics as a “minor” genre. Yet in the 1970s, a new generation of filmmakers—most notably Rainer Werner Fassbinder—revisited these films and revealed something far more complex: melodrama as a powerful and deeply critical form of social representation.
This course offers a journey through three landmark melodramas of 1950s American cinema, with particular attention to the work of Douglas Sirk. Together we will explore how these films use style, colour, emotion, and narrative excess to expose tensions around class, gender, identity, and desire.
At the centre of our discussion will be Far from Heaven (2001), Todd Haynes’s brilliant twenty-first-century reimagining of the classical melodrama tradition.
Across four sessions, we will examine:
- Melodrama and its long, conflictive relationship with film criticism
- Mise-en-scène, colour, and cinematic excess as expressive language
- Class, gender, identity, and desire in classical Hollywood cinema
- The lasting influence of melodrama on contemporary filmmaking
The films discussed include All About Eve (1950), All That Heaven Allows (1955), Imitation of Life (1959), and Far from Heaven (2001).
The course is open to students, teachers, researchers, and anyone interested in film analysis and cinema history. No previous technical knowledge is required.
Escuela LEAS presents this programme as a space for critical reflection and cultural analysis, guided by the academic and professional experience of Lic. Eduardo Gemetto, film specialist.
